BelNet Puts Online Tracking in Focus

Privacy depends on metadata and retention as well as encryption.

BelNet's privacy message warns that people are tracked online more than they realize. Encrypted message content does not by itself settle questions about sign-in metadata, resolver traffic, browser storage or device recovery. For a privacy product, the substantive evaluation is what data crosses service boundaries, how long it is retained and who can obtain exceptional access. A warning about tracking is a reason to examine those controls, not evidence that a product has eliminated exposure.
