A San Francisco Meetup Reaches the Watchman by Video

Background: The public beta and demo events were drawing the community from online chat toward meeting in person. Today: On Saturday, community members met in person in San Francisco. Impact and next steps: The meeting gave community ties a life beyond chat avatars, while showing the limits of joining from a remote watch post: he could take part in the conversation, but could not also monitor every message.

A creative chronicle combining project history with imagined scenes. Story events are not verification of network activity.

Background: The public beta and demo events were drawing the community from online chat toward meeting in person. The Night Watchman, however, had long been keeping an eye on messages and new questions, and could not necessarily leave that post. When friends in San Francisco arranged a gathering, he had to find a way to join.

Today: On Saturday, community members met in person in San Francisco. The Night Watchman attended remotely by video, hearing people connect familiar names from online discussions with the people behind them, and adding context about recurring player questions. The gathering gained voices and faces; he remained at his familiar online station.

Impact and next steps: The meeting gave community ties a life beyond chat avatars, while showing the limits of joining from a remote watch post: he could take part in the conversation, but could not also monitor every message. The Night Watchman planned to share a list of common questions with those at the meetup and discuss sharing replies later; whether anyone would take that on remained to be worked out.
