A Decent First Week, an Unclear Reason to Pay

On Friday, the studio had just heard feedback at a community meeting and now had to examine the first week of the public beta. The first week’s figures were decent, but conversion to paying users was merely average. The beta gave the discussion a basis in actual play rather than impressions from internal trials.

On Friday, the studio had just heard feedback at a community meeting and now had to examine the first week of the public beta. The gameplay team wanted to know whether players would stay; the people responsible for revenue had to judge whether the payment flow was getting in their way.

The first week’s figures were decent, but conversion to paying users was merely average. Some wanted to put more prompts in front of players. Others feared asking for money before players understood the battles. The team decided to separate the points where players got stuck from the moments when they chose to pay, then revisit where the payment prompt belonged.

The beta gave the discussion a basis in actual play rather than impressions from internal trials. Yet a decent first week did not resolve the hesitation around payment. The next question was whether players could not find something worth buying or had not yet found a reason to keep playing.
