Thanksgiving arrived, and the group was quieter than usual. The Night Watchman had updated his node machines but still often found himself checking the screen. On the holiday, he had to decide which checks could not wait and which messages could.
Today, he posted a photo of a node machine. Someone casually asked whether he was watching the machines even on a holiday. He said he would check that they were running after taking the photo, then step away for a while. Ordinary chat could wait until he returned; a real alert would need prompt attention. The group did not become any livelier.
The photo showed that a person was still looking after the nodes, and prompted the Night Watchman to state a boundary for holiday duty. He planned to write a short list of essential checks and messages that could wait, then discuss it with operators he knew. Whether anyone would share the duty had yet to be settled.
