Eight minutes offline prompt a maintenance plan

A creative chronicle combining project history with imagined scenes. Story events are not verification of network activity.
The Night Watchman was a longtime community member who operated a node. With the group focused on the expo and game events, his problem was more mundane: an unreliable network cable and his reluctance to step away from the monitoring screen.
He replaced the cable, taking his node offline for eight minutes. Once it recovered, he spent a long while regretting the gap. At first he considered doing the next replacement late at night so fewer people would see an offline notice. Then he decided that a hurried, hidden repair would only make him more anxious, and wrote down what to check before a change and how to confirm recovery afterward.
Those eight minutes did not become a wider network incident, but they showed him that routine maintenance could not depend on enduring each interruption alone. He planned to ask an operator he knew whether they could warn others before work on a connection and watch for problems on each other's behalf. He did not yet know whether anyone would agree or whether the next change would feel less fraught.
