Background: The night watchman was looking after the sentinel node. On his previous trip out to buy dinner, they had already tested the temporary handoff in practice. After returning, he still had to wait for the other person’s confirmation before ending his watch; if a written message went unanswered, the two of them had no other way to make contact.
Today: He and the familiar operator saved each other’s phone numbers and agreed to make a test call. He left his phone locked on the table and went to the sink to wash his lunch box. When he heard it ring, he dried his hands and answered. After the test, he added a line to the handoff checklist: if a written message receives no reply, call by phone, while still requiring both people to confirm that responsibility has been returned.

Before the next absence, they still need to agree who will keep watching if neither contact method works, and the latest time until which that person can continue.
