After the staking adjustment, node operators had to keep up with software and rewards while maintaining their daily uptime. The Night Watchman had long used his laptop to monitor his node, and he was starting to feel tied to the desk.
The number of online nodes reached a new high. Hearing his laptop’s fan, the Night Watchman said it had never been so loud. Some people in the group took the uptime record as a reason to relax. He instead checked whether his alerts were clear: which messages needed immediate attention, and which could wait.
More online nodes made the network look busy, but they did not ease his own monitoring burden. He planned to write down his check sequence for operators he knew and ask whether they could look out for one another. They had yet to agree on how alerts might be handed over, and the noisy fan reminded him he could not keep watching the screen alone indefinitely.
