A node ledger with no near break-even point

There was little news over the weekend, but the Night Watchman could not pause his node duties. A longtime community member and node operator, he had been worrying about lower rewards and how long it would take to recover what he had spent on his key.
As usual, he updated his ledger. Recalculating the node’s costs and returns at the current price, he found that breaking even remained a distant prospect. He did not use that bleak result to urge others to shut down. Instead, he included the effort of continued maintenance in his own assessment and considered which checks he would need to handle himself the following week.
The ledger offered no reassuring date to wait for, but it showed him that the purchase price was only part of the cost. He decided to rank his routine checks before considering whether trusted operators could watch out for one another. He still did not know how rewards would change.
