On Christmas Eve, the Night Watchman still had the routine care of his node machine on his mind. Elsewhere in the community, a holder who had staked keys back in 2024 was only now checking closely what it would take to leave.
Today, the Night Watchman dusted the node machine and told it, “See you next year.” Meanwhile, the holder learned that their 200 keys could not be sold and that redeeming the rewards would take another 180 days. They left a message in the group—“I’m out.” In the narrator’s later account, they did not appear again after that. No one there learned whether they would wait through the redemption period.
One person was still willing to tend the equipment; another left after finally understanding the limits on exiting. The Night Watchman did not treat that departure as a misunderstanding a reassuring sentence could fix. He planned to explain the keys’ nontransferability separately from reward redemption, so the next person asking would know their choices sooner.
