The Night Watchman had long used a laptop to tend his Sentry node. Continuous watch had left dust inside the machine and made him return to the screen at every alert. This cleaning required him to plan for a brief restart.
He opened the Sentry laptop and cleared out the dust. After restarting it, he checked the alert records one by one and closed the case only after confirming the entries he needed were there. Someone in the group asked whether a working machine meant he could now step away. He said the hardware was only one immediate concern; they still needed to discuss who would respond to unusual alerts.
The cleaning dealt with the maintenance at hand and prompted him to state the limits of a watch kept by one person. He planned to list the alerts to check before leaving the screen and the ordinary messages that could wait, then discuss mutual coverage with operators he knew. Whether anyone would join such an arrangement remained open.
