For half a month, the market had swung sharply up and down. The Night Watchman had to tend both to the arguments those moves stirred in the community and to his Sentry node. Its hard drive had served for two years, and he had planned to replace it. The question was how to confirm that the node kept pace with the chain through the restart.
The trading range finally narrowed: a high of $0.007511, a low of $0.007375, and a close of $0.00738, for a range of less than 2%. With fewer price arguments in the group, he replaced the old drive. He captured the sync height once before and once after the restart, waited for the node to catch up, and filed both images with his maintenance records.
The work gave him a record against which to compare the restart. It also showed him that telling a future operator merely that the machine had turned on would say little about whether the node had resumed properly. He decided to add a sync-height check to the next maintenance procedure; the new drive’s longer-term performance would still require routine observation.
