Dark Card Art Wins Approval, Clarity Remains Open

The auto-battler direction had made deck building central, and the studio now needed cards that players could distinguish visually. The art team delivered its first batch of card sketches. The vote gave the visual work a starting point and shifted the debate from whether people liked a dark style to how that style could show meaningful differences.

The auto-battler direction had made deck building central, and the studio now needed cards that players could distinguish visually. Artists and gameplay designers faced the same problem: the images needed character, while players still had to see quickly what they had chosen.

The art team delivered its first batch of card sketches. Their overall style was dark, and an internal vote approved it. Some liked the atmosphere; others worried that dark card faces might hide important information. The team kept the approved direction and made “can players see a card’s role and purpose?” a specific question for the next round of sketches.

The vote gave the visual work a starting point and shifted the debate from whether people liked a dark style to how that style could show meaningful differences. The artists could develop the images further, while the gameplay team needed to identify which information had to stand out. They still had to review the sketches together, point by point.
